Okay, bear with me, networking is Voodoo to me. I have a 400mhz TiBook, it doesn't have wireless capabilities built in. The original Airport cards (cardbus I believe?) are going for $85 on eBay, and I'm cheap . Does a USB adapter do the same thing? Am I reading right, do they do the same thing the cardbus model did, except they take up a USB port? IF that's the case, is there a model you recommend over others? Thanks. I'm thinking of setting my Linksys wireless router back up so my daughter can use the laptop to surf the net while I actually get to use my G5.

Thanks,
Tom

You can do the same thing as an AirPort card with a USB dongle. But only if you get Mac drivers for it. And only if you're willing to accept much slower traffic.

I cannot recommend using a USB wireless device with a Mac unless you've exhausted all other options.

I have a Ti/400 like you.

Honestly, while it's not the cheapest of options, I recommend Buffalo's PC cards. They use the same chipset as the AirPort cards, such that you don't actually need to install separate drivers: it can work off the AirPort's own software.

The one catch i've noticed is that OSX doesn't seem to like making PC Cards the default AirPort devices. You have to switch it over yourself, which requires an admin password. This is, however, a relatively minor annoyance. Otherwise, it works great.

I'm going to try to remember this Buffalo product. With original AirPort cards getting scarce, this could be a great alternative.
