I am currently in Israel where they use VPN to authenticate broadband accounts. So basically you hook up the cable modem and have a connection but you can't load anything until you connect to your provider using VPN. The upshot of this is that we have two laptops here but only one can be connected at a time as when one is connected then the second one gets an authentication error if it tries to sign in to VPN also.

So, is it possible for us to use the Airport Express router we have to share the vpn connection so we can both use our broadband at the same time? I thought it might have a direct vpn dial in available but I can't find the option anywhere? Is there another way of configuring the router to share the vpn connection somehow?

Please help as this one computer at a time thing is driving us crazy!!

The router would have to be able to run a VPN client to do that. Betcha it won't. Betcha that's why the ISP does this, too. While not good customer service, it's a valid technique, and I'll bet that the user agreement actually says "only one computer connected at a time" too. Sorry.

Thanks ghporter. Well it looks like that while the Airport Express handles PPTP Passthrough it does not act as a PPTP client. I picked up a dead cheap wifi router today that does work as a pptp client, punched in the details and now happily surfing away with two laptops. Hate to say it but my Airport Express seems to be an overpriced useless paperweight at this point I kind of wish Apple stuff was a bit more flexible sometimes...

It's all about location, isn't it? And timing-if you'd known that it wouldn't help where you are now, would you have bought it? And if you already had it, would you have brought it with you?

Hindsight is 20/20, but it's also a PITA...

For anyone interested (as I just got a pm on this topic). The router I bought was an Edimax wifi router from BUG for 299 NIS (which is pretty cheap for Israeli peripherals). Just look on the router packaging that it supports PPTP not just VPN passthrough. Also, when talking to the sales clerks they didn't seem to understand what VPN was, they just call it PPTP.

Hope that helps.
