cheers
My macPro arrives next week. Im getting fiberoptic in the house from Verizon.

they supply ( as to my neighboor) a D-Link D1 624 wireless router

I do not want a wireless network for various reasons: I have one computer and they will put an ethernet jack from the basement to the wall where my computer is to be

I also don't have an airport card in the macPro!

will I be able to just plug my MP with the ethernet card into the wall?

will I be able to plug my MPro into the D-Link router they supply if I have to and turn off the wireless freature and use it as a wired router?

do I have to buy my own router?

most of the FiOS people didn't know but they said the tech installers would.

best for me: MeGa ( )ethernet cable from MacPro to Wall outlet to all that stuff in the basement

cheers

Ypu have to use the router Verizon supplies w/ fios. Have the installer turn off the wirelss or do it yourself. Simply plug ur MacPro into one of the switched ports on the back of the router. Done. Enjoy Fios!!!!!! I can't wait for it to be avail to me!

Having a router between you and the big, bad Internet is usually a good thing. It helps protect you from bad people doing bad things-even if you're using a Mac. But if you don't want wireless, you shouldn't need to have it. On the flip side, I once bought a wired router that wound up costing me about $8 after rebate... And if you only have the one computer, just turning on the OS X firewall is a very good level of protection.

Now here's the thing: I haven't found anything in any of the FOUR versions of the DI-624 that allows you to just turn off the wireless. So indigomac's suggestion to have the installer turn off the wireless is good. Or he'll say "well we have this wired-only router, but EVERYBODY wants wireless so we just bring that to every install" and you can wait a bit and have them give you a wired router. Whatever-tell the installer that you DO NOT want wireless and see what happens.

So (he asked, afraid to hear the answer) just how fast is your connection going to be?

I'll answer the speed question for him:

5Mb d/l 2MB u/l---35$
15Mb 2Mb---45$
30Mb 5Mb---180$

Anyway, w/ fios yiou absolutely have to use the router verizon provides as it doubles as the modem(though w/ fiber there really is no modem, it acts more as a bridge) w/o it you can't join the fiber network. It also allows them to troubleshoot remotely.

great Tips!

the FiOS guy came by (sort of like the CableGuy, but more advaced) to measure out the OC
(Optical Cable have to get with the new lingo, also called "glass" ) and he said the wireless could be turned off.

so Ill do that

I also have to look for a Primer on Mac Firewalls any suggestions?

Im getting 5Mb/sec download for 29.99 free everything in the house

they take out the copper cable and install some impressive boxes and battery back up

you regular telephone then goes down the OC "glass" too.

they seem to be offering two packages to partially cover the initial work of re glassing
yourhouse:

29.99 if you have DSL 35 if you don't but you get one month free

35.00 unlimilted calling USA if you just want telephone. cheapest telephone is $20/m other wise

then the Feds N Heads tack on a lot of charges you can't seem to get away with about $10 - 12 /bill

we will see

cheers

Do enjoy it and let us know how the install goes.

They will also be offering TV service over that single fiber pipe in the near future.

Ill let you know next week:

Ive tried my neighbors and a couple of issue aren't clear to me:

I use Thoth for my newsreader, and over a wireless network I do not get full bandwith even with only one computer connected. I get full 'other' download speeds

they do offer TV now. they charge 12.95 for basic. I get basic from Comcast for 6.95 these are over the air channels and where i live in this town they make Comcast deliver two additional PBS channels.

I route my analog cable into my computer with AlchemyDVR. this iwll not work with the MacPro as it has a PCIe not PCI channel

Ive order Miglia TVMAX HD. it is supposed to get non encripted digital cable.
it gets over the air HDTV very well, and reception is excellent here.

if this tuner works with FiOS digital Ill change over.

I watch very little TV, and just record to my computer

will update this thead next week

I thought Id report on my FiOS experience:

the "FiOS Guy" came last week and installed the stuff. took about 4 hours from the pole in the street to the side of the house to the basement to the large multiplexer and backup battery to the wall to the enthernet and phone jack in the wall on the first floor.

very smooth. very professional.

verizon no longer uses the d-link, earlier customers got it and the technician said they were junk and verizon dropped them. my neighboors were early FiOS-ers and they have the DLINK and it really is very poor stuff.

I have an ActionTEC. its out of the spacesstation and very impressive.

Im only hardwired to the router and its set up via a webpage of all things.

my speed is consistently 650KB/sec which is i guess the 5Mb even in stormy weather.

Im very happy with it. to set it up on any computer you just plug into the router and got to network and chose DHCP and apply

done

i highly recommend it to anyone who can afford it and where its offered.

cheers

Congrats!

If they offered that service here (deep in SBC AT&T territory) I would be interested.

By the way, except for Apple's, ALL consumer-level networking equipment that I'm aware of is configured through a built-in web page. Much simpler than a platform specific app (even though Apple now provides its AirPort Admin Utility for both Mac and Windows platforms) for setting things up.

Now what's this "storym weather" you're talking about? Around here there's hot and dry, followed by HOT and dry, with frequent bouts of OMG IT'S HOT and VERY DRY. I'm going to have to research this "storm" thing you mention...

gh:

to help with your research, go to the intellicast.com national radar map.

that green stuff, sometimes yellow stuff and O My God red stuff is what you want to look into

the DSL modem probably works where you live not in the yellow and red areas.

walked a neighbors dog last sat, two doors down, and on the way back after walking the dog I got soaked to the skin

you can google that concept too

cheers
