So, if I have a VAIO desktop and a macbook does my VAIO need to have an airport card in it in order for me to use it all with my AirPort extreme and my cable modem?

Your VAIO needs SOME wireless card to use it wirelessly. If you've been happy with it wired, you do not need to change it, but if you want wireless, ANY WiFi compliant card with Windows drivers (that's almost every WiFi card out there) should work. There may be an internal bay especially for a VAIO specific wireless card, so check with Sony's support before you start shopping.
