I just upgraded to a 10Mbps connection(down) with 1Mbps(up), but if I do a speedtest on speakeasy with the closest server I am getting 2.8-3Mbps. My ISP had me do their test with a java program, and it says I am getting 8-9Mbps on average. They also had me do a direct download of a file and say I am getting those speeds. But every browser based test only gets me about 3Mbps down but I am getting 1Mbps up(which is right). I have tried Safari, Omniweb and Firefox for the speed tests. Is there anything browser dependant that could be slowing down my connection? Is there any other test I can do to see what speed I am truly getting? Cheers.

Try downloading something reasonably large from Akamai, like an HD movie trailer from apple.com/trailers

I have menumeter installed. That is what got me questioning the results. If I download a file from my ISP directly, I do seem to get fast speeds. If I do any speed tests I seem to get the proper upload result but a slow download result. The java test by my ISP seems to be fast, as well as the direct download from them. I never seem to get faster than 400Kbps showing in my menumeters. I should be getting over a 1000 if I read the Kb to Mb correctly. Is this similar to the "packet loss" problem? Sorry...Newbie question... Still learning about networking!

Something is definitely wrong there, unfortunately I don't know what it is. My 4mb connection gets me about 470kbs
