Hi All,
I'm looking for a reliable travel-sized wifi g router.
I have a Linksys WRT54GC, which is small but still requires external power. I'm looking for one that will run from USB power.
I'll be using it to get my powerbook to talk to my wifi-enabled camera while I shoot weddings, so I need "g" speeds in infrastructure mode (not ad-hoc mode, which is what you get when you connect the camera directly to the powerbook with a computer-to-computer network).
Thanks in advance for any help,
Chas

If you're just looking for a wirless card for your powerbook (a router is something different), there are lots PCMCIA and USB dongles that will do this. D-Link comes to mind as making a USB card.
Otherwise, I've never heard of a "router" that's powered off of USB, but I guess it's possible.

I don't follow you here. You can make the Powerbook act like a base station and the camera shouldn't know the difference.
If you really must have an external device, the Airport Express is excellent.

Hi Chris,
The issue is "infrastructure" vs. "ad-hoc" modes. Connecting directly the powerbook is an ad-hoc connection, and runs a "b" speeds, not what I need to transfer 12Mb image files ("g" speed is slow enough, but at least it's 5 times faster than b).
It is necessary to have a router to connect at g. See the second paragraph in this post here:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...d+hoc&qf=m
Airport express is good, but not too versatile (requires mains power, tying me to a wall). A router powered by USB would allow me to work anywhere (necessary when shooting events and weddings).
Cheers,
Chas

Now I see. This is a camera specific issue. The camera connects at b speed when connecting to an ad-hoc network. Although you said the Powerbook runs at b speeds, I don't believe that to be true.
I cannot find any information on USB powered wireless routers. I doubt that USB can provide the necessary power.

Hi again Chris, sorry to take so long to get back to this.
It occurred to me, after reading your last post, that I was taking as gospel the "ad-hoc connections run at "b" speeds" statements that I have read. I wanted to resolve this issue, so I started a new thread here:
http://forums.macnn.com/92/networkin...ok-connection/
and got reasonably definitive answers (computer to computer connections run at ad-hoc "b" speeds, you need a router to connect at infrastructure "g" speeds).
As for USB power routers, they exist. I know of two models, one is here: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=346 . Both models I've found are a little old, and I'm now wondering if there was something newer and more powerful out there (and if not, I'm going to have to figure out which one to get).
Cheers!
Chas
