Is it possible to use a nearby wireless access point and an Airport card (each serving the same single computer) to enhance the overall signal reception?

If mutliple access points have the same SSID and are connected to the same network, with the same security (WPA/WEP keys), then a client can roam amongst them freely. I'm not sure if this answers your question, but if it doesn't then please provide more details on what you want to do.

Well, the computer in question is not really mobile at all (it's a 20" iMac). I'm just interested to see if I can specifically boost the overall quality of the iMac's wireless signal by using its internal AirPort card in conjunction with a separate hardware access point. I'm not really interested in increasing the range or radius of my wireless network in this particular case. I wonder is if there is a way to leverage the extra antennae and additional radio in the access point to get a stronger signal.

What runs the wireless network that the iMac is currently on? I assume that the it's is all by itself, connecting to a remote access point...?
If so, then there are several options: - Get an external antenna for your iMac (hooking it up is another issue, but AirPort cards do have a standard antenna port that is usually hooked into the internal antenna) and tune it to the existing AP. (hyperlinktech website)
- If the AP is an AirPort, you can use the AirPort Express to extend it; other vendors offer this capability (I know that Cisco AP's can chain up to 3 w/o additional wiring)
- Install a new AP using the wired network such that it has the same SSID/Security (or separate, if you want to keep it for yourself)
