I'm having issues with my comcast service - for some reason their cable modem won't assign an IP address to my wireless router anymore. it works if I directly connect my macbook pro to modem, but the router route is a no-go. I've tried four different routers, all different brands. it's safe to assume the problem in on their side (in fact if you go to google and enter 'comcast linksys router problem' you'll see it's been happening to people for years).

anyways, they're sending someone out to take a peek, but until then I've got this one machine successfully connected to the cable modem via ethernet, and I want to share that computer's internet connection via airport. I've set up internet sharing and made sure personal web sharing was on, etc, but I still can't connect any machines to the one with a link to comcast.

I looked on apple's site and all over this forum, but I can't find a basic tutorial that shows how to connect client machines to the one serving the internet connection. can someone help me out? I've tried using 'create network' and entering the serving machine's name, to no avail. or should the serving computer's name just appear in the other computers' available network list under airport?

It's not a Mac issue, it's a cable modem issue. The cable modem will generally only allow you to connect one device to it until you turn it (the cable modem) off and turn it back on. Since it currently "likes" your computer, it won't recognize your router because they have different hardware addresses. Turn OFF the modem and router, plug the router into the modem, turn on the MODEM and wait two minutes (time it-you want the modem to finish its start up sequence), and then turn on the router. Odds are that this will cause the modem to recognize the router and assign it an IP. If not, the service tech should see that it's a real problem and replace the modem.

Good luck, and please post what happens!
