Hi,

I've got 10.3.9 clients running ARD 3. I have the ARD 3 program and I'm trying to send a terminal command to them to killall ntpd, but the command never seems to complete, and on the machines ntpd never is killed.

This is all part of trying to get the machines to sync with their time server. So if anyone knows a good command to make clients sync, that's also a good workaround.

ssh root@remoteip /usr/sbin/ntpdate server.address.to.sync.with

Note that you either have to enable root account on all boxes, or otherwise setup an suid proxy for ntpdate. You can script this with public keys (no passwords needed). You also need to make sure that the "Set date & time automatically" checkbox is unchecked in the Date & Time preference panel (you can't run ntpdate while ntpd is running).

Why not just use the Date & Time system preference panel to run NTP all the time? You can specify the server address by typing in the field.

Right, I know I can SSH, but that defeats the point of ARD.

I got it working today. I actually ran the script over ARD to resync times across 13 different buildings and it worked everywhere. Don't know ARD changed it's mind.

Oh, as for why I can't just change the prefs, clients are 10.3.9, time will only sync when logged in as admin, but it seems to do it on it's own sometimes.
