i have searched but no threads that i found gave me a full anser on how to start from scratch. OK:

i have an imac that is on 24/7 and i want so set it up as a file server through FTP.i have no idea how to set it up, so i need help doing that. thanks!

Don't setup FTP, it is insecure - your password is sent in the clear using FTP. Nobody should be using it if they don't have to, and since you haven't stated any particularly special needs, it sounds like this applies to you.

I suggest using SFTP instead, although there are several other options available as well. To enable SFTP, simply check off the "Remote Login" option in your System Preferences Sharing pane.

With an SFTP client... There are numerous to choose from. Many FTP clients also support SFTP, which as Cyberduck, Transmit, etc.
