Hello,

I just got Road Runner today. If I run an ethernet cable from the cable modem to my iBook 1.42Ghz G4, it works fine. Superb, even.

However, problems show up when I plug in my AirPort Express Base Station. I have tried a variety of setups, but none result in my actually getting on the internet.

I believe the IP address is fixed to the router. When the ethernet cable is plugged into the AEBS, and the AEBS is set manually to the same IP address, Subnet Mask, and Router as my iBook indicates when it is plugged directly into the cable modem, the light on the AEBS is steady green. However, when I change it to configure via DHCP, the light flashes yellow. So, I figure it's right to configure it manually.

But still, Safari, Mail, and AIM all come up with nothing.

Time Warner uses some sort of fixed ID on the cable modem to authenticate, according to the tech guy who came out. Therefore, my thought was that one can plug anything into the cable modem (such as an AEBS) and not worry about PPPoE or MAC address authenticating.

I live in zip code 14744, western New York. Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks,
D

Turn off the cable modem. Turn off the AEBS. Plug the ethernet cable between the two. Turn on ONLY the cable modem and wait TWO FULL MINUTES (time this-you need to let the modem go through its whole startup process). Turn on the AEBS and let IT go through its startup process. Now try it.

Most of the time, a cable modem will ONLY connect with one ethernet device at a time. But that's (typically) only while it remains on-you can get it to connect with a new device by turning it off so it "forgets" the first device.

So yes, you can plug just about anything into your modem, but you have to play the game by its rules. Good luck.

Cable companies are notorious for locking in the MAC address of the first item you plug into the cable modem, making it impossible to use any other hardware later on. If they are doing this, then you'll have to call them so they can send a reset signal to the cable modem. After doing this you'll then be able to plug in the Airport Express. Make sure the Airport Express is the first device you connect to the cable modem after they reset it. If you plug in your iBook first you'll be back to where you were before.
