If the Linksys router you're referring to is your router, and the signal strength (shown by the Airport icon) is good enough, that indicates that your router is not successfully establishing a connection to the Internet. What type of connection do you have - cable or DSL?

Need some detail here. The number of potential problems range is pretty big. Is the Linksys connected correctly to the cable modem or the DSL modem? Does the Mac have an IP address that starts with "169"? Give us some more information, especially things like the indicator lights on the modem and the Linksys.

Let's start out with this: "Do you own a router yourself?" If not, then your problem is that the wireless network you've detected is NOT YOURS. There's no telling how it's configured, and it could easily just be set up to keep people out.

Details are crucial. Tell us EVERYTHING, starting with what kind (if any) of broadband connection you have, and what kind of hardware you have set up with it.

Oh, and WELCOME!

Note also that just because there is a wireless network available doesn't mean that the network is connected to the Internet!

Im not aware that I have set up any broadband connection...all I have done is connected to the linkskys network

I was under the impression thats all I needed to do to get online

To get online, you have to have a connection of some kind. This doesn't just happen, you know; you need to have made some arrangements. Most folks get either cable or DSL (known as ADSL in the UK and Europe), but there are other methods.

So anyway, where are you located? We could point you to a well-regarded ISP...

Okay thank you.

Im in the UK, Birmingham to be exact...

I thought the whole point of the AirPort connection was that its wireless and you therefore dont need a ADSL modem?

So confused!

The wireless part is local-QUITE local. Typical range is less than 100 feet. There ARE areas that have wireless distribution (and might use an AirPort card for the client end). But you should probably talk to BT to start with to see what they can provide you.
