I also have an airport express to plug my speakers into in one room

Could I plug a network cable into an hp photosmart network printer at one end, and the other into my airport, to have my printer on the network?

Without knowing which actual HP printer you've got and which Netgear wireless router. I would say plug the printer into the Netgear router via a network (ethernet) lead.

otherwise the only way it'll plug into the Airport Express would be via the USB port and have it shared that way.

Its a photosmart 2575.

the problem is, the router is downstairs so cant plug the printer in their - i want it upstairs

could share over usb, but would prefer to use its networking features.

so, in short, can i not connect it to the airport express to network it?

if your Airport Express is on the same network (IP range) as your Netgear you'll be able to share the printing part of the photosmart via the base station. but i don't think you'll be able to use any of the other features across the network.
