OK this happened once before but then stopped.

I have the G5 and MBP on the same network. When I click on network on the MBP, it sees the G5 and goes through the normal AFP logon process.

The other way around (G5 to MBP) and it asks me to logon using FTP protocol. If I use cmd+k, it uses afp. The settings on both machines are exactly the same.

I have tried unchecking settings, restarting, checking and restarting, but problem persists - any help please?

If anyone can figure out how OSX prioritizes protocols, it would be interesting to know the details. The only sure-fire way I've found is to use the specific protocol (smb:// afp:// ftp://, etc.) when I connect to a remote machine. Ditto for remote printers.

bookmark the IP/DNS name of your machine in the Connect to Server dialog.

Thanks besson, but I was hoping for more of a fix than a workaround. Eg somebody else comes over with their laptop - I would have to find out their assigned IP. What happens the bookmark if the IP changes etc etc - too much hassle.

The point is that it shouldn't be doing this.
