Does the length of the cable from the modem to router matter? Before i had it connected with a six foot cable and it worked fine, to get better reception in other parts of the house i moved the router(keeping the modem in the same spot) and used a 50 ft. cable. Now the router doesn't work. hooking up into the modem works, and the router is brand new and worked before fine. Its a linksys g router and cable modem if that matters. Any ideas??? Thanks for the help.

Length of cable should have no effect on your router's signal strength.
Make sure you are not using a crossover ethernet cable, just a regular ethernet cable. This link explains the difference.

If they're ethernet devices, the standard gives you up to ONE HUNDRED METERS of cable length. For safety's sake (we're talking about consumer devices) I'd never try to go past 50m. Your 50ft cable may be defective...That's what I'd assume from your statements.

thanks for the clarification tooki.
based on the OPs description, a damaged/defective cable is the most likely culprit.
