This might jump around a bit so I hope it makes sense.

I just moved into a new house and got Comcast high speed internet. I'm experiencing severe lag whenever I click a link to go anywhere. It is upwards of 15-20 seconds before the page begins to load. Once the page begins to load its fast and speed tests on Speakeasy.net comfirm this. Its just the initial loading of the page that takes forever. I've tried pinging various websites through the terminal and get the same thing - it takes forever for it to start but once it does the speed is fine and there is no packet loss.

The odd thing is I've never experienced this issue anywhere else. My parents and my gf's parents both have Comcast internet and I can use thier networks just fine. Furthermore it appears to be a Macintosh only issue. Both the Comcast technician that came out using a PC laptop as well as a friend of mine that tried it out with a PC laptop have no lag issues.

Given this issue is only appearing in my new house the only possible cause we've been able to come up with is that is the modem. The modems my parents and my gf's parents have at their homes are older and date back to the days of OS X 10.1, the latest version of the OS that Comcast supports. (Which I find incredibly difficult to understand why this is.) The modem (model information is below) we've got at our new house though is a brand new one that also supports a phone line too.

I'm tempted to go out to Best Buy or Circuit City tomorrow and pick up a self connect kit with a different brand modem in it to try out but I'm not sure if that's even possible given that I'm assuming I have to call Comcast with the modem serial number, etc to get it to work. I don't want to run into an issue of them thinking I'm setting up a new account or something.

We have a wireless router too but we're having the lag issue even when connected via the ethernet cable directly to the modem.

*Edit* I just discovered a further oddity: I loaded up Netscape Communicator in OS 9/classic mode and don't experience the lag using that. Everything loads right up.

Anyone else experienced this? Any possible solutions? I'm really stumped on this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hardware information:
Computers: Specs are in my signature. Running OS X 10.4.8
Comcast modem: Arris TM402P/110

Sounds like a possible DNS issue. Is your connection set up for full DHCP or are some settings manually typed in? The lag you're experiencing is very likely a DNS issue where the request for Whatever.com needs to be resolved to an IP address. Either the connection to the DNS server is poor or is pointed to the wrong server, or the server is having issues.
