I don't think USB printer sharing works cross platform, but I could be wrong.

i just tried LPT and the same error occured.

apple says it has something to do with win2k printing authorisation but they don't know what exactly (obviously). however the UK level 1 tech support advised to add a mac user to win2k users list so that it could be authorised. it didn't work.

any ideas?

Oooh I did this before but I can't remember exactly how.

Try viewing the files on the W2K machine over the network, authenticate as the mac account you added to W2K and tell it to remember. Then it should work.

If you look in the print queue when you try and print are you getting an NT_AUTHORIZATION_ERROR or something?

I have tried to do that from Jag, Panther and Tiger. Couldn't do it at all..nothing worked. The only thing I could tell you is that the protocol samba was the one to use. You might want to research that.

good luck

I'm sure that you would prefer not to spend any money, but one option is to get an Airport express. I share my usb laserjet between my PC and Mac through this, and it works very well.

i tried samba but it didn't help. 'command key' on more printers.. advanced.. samba.. Smb://user: psw@workgroup/server/printer.

re error in printer dialog window. it says "InterfaceType Error = -1". the log in console is the same as in my first post.

There are a lot of factors involved here. One is the printer's driver. If it wasn't written with sharing across a network and cross-platform then your chances are poorer. And W2K is NOT the most ideal platform to share anything through anyway; XP is much better. But then, it's still not necessarily going to work.

Finally, which Epson printer is it? Some printers have third-party, open source drivers that work better than the manufacturer's (though this is a random thing).

My bottom line would be to buy a 2-port USB switch (a manual one) and connect the computers to the printer through the switch. Yes, it's a hassle, but it's more of a hasle NOT being able to print, right?

it is epson aculaser c1100

i have been trying to connect it via win2k machine usb port, belkin usb hub (to win2k machine), win2k machine lpt port. in every case i could see printer in the network (shared in win2k), i could install drivers (latest was downloaded from epson website for intel based mac), but i couldn't make it print a single page.

every time i was getting the following message

Oct 13 17:24:54 Alexs-Computer Epson_Laser: kCGErrorRangeCheck : Window Server communications from outside of session allowed for root and console user only

in mac os i used to connect it via samba and via locating it on the network.

it seems that i made all possible combinations of trying to make the thing work.

pls share some experience and throw more ideas. even most crazy ones

Right ok, I've just done this with a W2K machine and a Kyocera Mita FS1020D on my network, works flawlessly apart from the printer not liking the Generic driver i assigned it.

I used the Administrator account to log into the machine and told OS X to remember it in my keychain.

thanks seanc, there seems to be a progress. after having it assigned a generic driver i could see no erro msgs in console and the print task appears in win2k printer properties. it uploads data into the printers memory, printer also flashes as busy, but then nothing comes out of it. it eats the data and doesn't print anything. am glad i have seen it communicating with mac os through windows though it did not print. any more ideas as of where to investigate

Well it definitely seems like a driver issue now, i'm sorry I don't have anything else to suggest.. yet.

no i haven't

i upgraded w2k to win2003 as somebody here told the networking might be an issue with w2k. it still wont print even under win2003.

W2K is not networking friendly; it's built to take some work to get anything shared or to share anything else. When you say "win2003" are you talking about the most current build of XP or "Server 2003"? It makes a difference. XP is fairly simple to use in any networking task, but Server takes some extra work, though it's simpler than Win2K.

And keep in mind that USB printers are notoriously difficult to get working across a network. A switch box may be a more effective and efficient way to share that printer.

Ha, I actually prefer W2K. It's more like Windows 9x. I'm sure your problem now is just the driver, I'm sure someone here can give you some more information on how to fix it.
