I know there's a forum for networking, but I figured since I think I might have a problem with my Powerbook, I'd ask my question here.

Whenever I'm in class (large lecture halls), I don't seem to get any wireless signals from our school, but people with Macbook's do (this is just a general observation). PC users however, are almost always connected online. This peeves me! Is airport that bad? If I buy a wireless card for my PCI slot, will that help at all?

Sounds like your antenna connector may be loose or something. Airport isn't that bad. BTW you have no PCI slots.

Metal case + poor AirPort antena position = poor reception with PowerBook. You don't say which PB you have (I can never remember what screen sizes the different versions had); the titanium case PB had HORRIBLE wireless reception, while the aluminum case PB has much better. The MacBook Pro has very good reception-I've gotten online with mine in places my Dell didn't see enough signal to notice the network.

If you got a PC card (NOT a PCI card-PBs don't have a slot for that!), you might get better reception, but you have to find one that works with MacOS.

AND...

This DOES go in the Networking forum. If it looked like a PowerBook problem, someone would tell you. It's not a "problem," just the way that particular model works.

I have both a 17" PowerBook G4 and a MacBook (black). The PowerBooks wireless reception is pretty bad. The MacBook's is much better. Unfortunately, neither compare to my Dell Inspiron... I was on vacation in Grenada and that thing picked up a wireless network from a hotel almost a mile away!!

l008com's suggestion is a good one-make sure your antenna cable's properly connected-even the best antenna system can't help if it ain't connected.

jeffreyfrabutt, I'm getting BETTER performance out of my new MacBook Pro than out of my Inspiron 8200. MUCH better. Which Inspiron model were you using?

Interesting. I'll have to have an Apple store check up on this whenever I have time.

Just check out Apple's knowledge base article on installing the AirPort card in your particular PowerBook model-it'll show you how to get at it and how to connect the cable. That's pretty much all you need. And while it's not as simple to get to as in an iBook, it's not that bad on a PowerBook, so unless you really need plenty of help, you can check it out yourself and save some time.

Of course I LIKE going to the Apple Store just to browse, so if that's part of your world too, feel free!

To illustrate how good the range is on the MacBook...I'm visiting friends in Cincinnati right now and I brought my MacBook. They live in a new housing development, and the houses are not right on top of each other. There's a fair distance between these houses. Right now I've got...(checks his airport icon)...12 wireless networks to choose from, but only one is open. I have 1-2 bars and I get fast enough connections to video chat with people. :-)

MacBook Airport ROCKS!
