I have a macbook.
And a linksys router.

I have been able to connect to the internet with my computer and my router before.
One day it just stopped working.
I can still connect to the internet with a ethernet cord.
but not wirelessly.

however,
when i try to connect wirelessly.
it says im connected.
but it wont open up ichat or safari.
or anything internet related.

i have tried to fix this with network assistant and dignostics.
but it says im connected.
so it dosent really help.

does anyone know how i can fix this?!

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!

Which Linksys router do you have-model and version, please. When you connect wirelessly, what IP address does your AirPort card get assigned? If it starts with "169..." it's not a real address, just the "dummy" address the card assigns itself. The typical range for Linksys products is 192.168.1.X.

Did this problem crop up after a software update?

I think one good step to take is to delete your current location in your AirPort/network preferences, and then start connecting again; this may take care of it for you.

Report back how you're doing and I hope we can help you out. And again, WELCOME!

Have you done the simple things like unplugging the router's power cord for a couple of minutes? These things are not built with "mission critical" level firmware, and they often need a reboot when they get cranky. I have to do that with my wired Linksys router every now and then because my DHCP computers (all my laptops) can't get a good IP address. Your issue could be something that easy.

I thought that router handled IP addresses in the 192.168.1.100 though 149. How did you get an address that ends in .70? Do you always get a .70 address? Are you set for DHCP?
Enquiring minds want to know!

I've been having similar problems with a WRT54G version 6 as well; if I assign myself a static IP and manually set the DNS servers, I can connect, but DHCP won't assign an address for either a wired or wireless connection. (My Windows Vista RC2 laptop gets a DHCP-assigned IP address just fine.) Like you, it just suddenly stopped working; no changes on the router or laptop, just stopped suddenly.

I've reset the router, set up new connections on my iBook G4, no love...only assigning a static IP address seems to work. I even tried turning of WAP2 encryption but no effect. A firmware upgrade to the router didn't help either. I can get an IP via DHCP from other locations (thought I had trouble on campus today but it apparently was a network issue that was resolved while I was away) but not my own access point.

The workaround I've been using is to set up two locations; "Automatic" which uses DHCP, and "Home" which uses static IP assignments. It's a workaround, and while I'm not too thrilled with it, at least it works for now.

I'm not sure if I really "fixed" it but DHCP appears to be working now. I reflashed the firmware from 1.01.0 back down to 1.00.9 and now I have DHCP capability back.

Seems like a dumb fix to me, since my problems started with the older firmware, but the reflash seems to have fixed the problem, at least for now.

The problems could have been in corrupted firmware that the newer version didn't properly overwrite. It's uncommon, but sometimes firmware updates don't work properly. At least things are working for you now, whatever the root cause was-sometimes that's the best one can do.

True--now the iBook won't sleep automatically (argh!!) but that's a topic for another thread.
