OK so I am still setting up my Mac Pro. Big issue now is that any folder on my NAS Buffalo (1 terrabyte) take up to 2 minutes to display. The more files in the folder the longer.

Is there a trick to speed this process up? My windows machine open these folders in no time. Same with my ubuntu (dual boot AMD machine). However my mac pro (3 gig xeon) is taking a very long time. Some research on the net suggests that there is some incompatability between the buffalo terra stations and mac os. Is this true?

i think we need additional information before anyone can give advice such as:

what protocol are you using to connect?

describe the network you're on and how the mac pro and the nas is connected.

have you tried pinging the nas from the mac pro to see how the latency is?

tried changing the network cable?

try using different protocols? afp (if the nas supports it), smb, nfs (if applicable).

I just moved the unsorted files into its own directory and things open fine. Seems if there are over 5,000 files in a directory, it takes a long time to open it.

ok i have been at it all day. Here is the deal, if I have a windows XP running in parrarels on my mac i can copy about 10x times faster than on the mac itself! Which basically tells me there are no problems with my network. A quick example of issues. My nas has all my photos. I copy them from my canon camera in folders called 123canon, etc. Each folder has 100 pictures. I just tried to copy a folder from the nas to my local hard drive. 8 minutes!! and its still not done. 154 megs. If I have just one large file on the nas, it gets copied fairly quickly.

Is some sorting or indexing going on?

Also - i have another folder that has 10,000 tiny jpegs (60k each). It took it about 30 minutes to open this folder.

Once again, in Parallels, running windows XP on the same mac, it took 3 seconds.

Someone please help me out here. I need my mac to move some folders and files. I am sure the NAS is not the issues- unless there is some direct compatability issue between the buffalo nas and mac osx.

Once again I have the Xeon 3.0 Gigahertz mac with 3 gigs of ram (12 more gigs of ram on order).

OK - not that I am talking to myself, but this may help others. According to the unofficial buffalo wiki, there is an SMB issue with buffalos. I quote:

"I tuned Terastaions Performance modify the smb.conf. Just change the Socket-Option to socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192 insted of socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_SNDBUF=12888 SO_RCVBUF=12888 as mentioned here: [Appendix B] B.2 Samba Tuning (Just take a look at Figure B.1: SO_SNDBUF size and performance). Performance before: 600MB in 3 Minutes - after 50 Seconds. But don't forget, that Terastation overrides this Values at every Startup. But you can use and modify Aarons Script: Hacking - Terastation -Sven

TeraStationPro - Terastation

Anyway -- this did the trick. The files copy very fast - but display of files over 1000 in a folder still takes a long time.
