Did you do the regular setup through the XBox? What I've seen from stuff online on the 360 shows the setup to be pretty straightforward and easy. So set the 360's wireless to pick up a DHCP address (also called an "automatic" address) and if it gives yout he option, select your AirPort network as your preferred network. That should be it...

i did set my network up as wpa 2 security , and now i find that's not compatible
hmm
but it says in my airport set up panel my wpa 2 is wpa and wpa 2 cpmpatible
i have an old 15" ti pbG4 and that connects , despite the card being airport not airport extreme compatible

Let the AirPort device select the security, and the wireless adapter will go with it as well as it can. From my perspective, WPA 2 is more security than you need at home-it's also not fully supported by all WiFi client adapter out there right now, which can be a problem.
I'd stick with WPA-Personal (which is WPA, preshared key, with TKIP management) if I were you. I'll bet the XBox adapter will work well that way.
