So here's the deal. I work offsite and would like to gain access to my iMac at home through Apple Remote Desktop. My home network is all apple so I'm hoping this will be as seamless as possible.

The problem i'm having right now is I have no clue what ip address to use when I'm connecting offsite. At home, I connect fine and can control my iMac from my macbook, but when I try to connect offsite, it asks me for a ip address that I have tried, but doesn't work. I'm guessing it's because of the router.

Does anyone know what's going on? If so, can you help me out?

Thanks.

Simple. All you have to know is your home Mac's IP address as your router has assigned it. Of course, your router has given it a DHCP address. And you can't find your router because it has been assigned a DHCP address also...!

So, you have to find your router's address, point the ARD port to your desktop Mac. The second and third parts are fairly easy. You can assign your target Mac a static IP through the router and then port map ARD to it. The tricky part is finding your router's IP address which usually doesn't change that often. My Comcast router IP hasn't changed in over two weeks.

Someday, the internet will be a very important part of human existence...

Yep, and if your home IP changes a lot too, consider getting an account with No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP or Dynamic Network Services, Inc. -- DynDNS -- Welcome
