Hello all,

This is my first post on these forums and my first post as a Mac user, so please forgive any ignorance on my part!

I recently purchased a MacBook 2ghz system having used Windows for the last ten years. I have to say, I love the system...everything just...works. I have Windows installed via Parallels and everything in that respect works just fine; I can connect to my work VPN, access our fileservers, exchange mail etc.

However, I would like to know if it's possible to do the same via OS X. I have successfully set up a PPTP VPN connection from the mac which connects just fine. However, I'm not entirely clear how to connect to work fileservers and exchange mailboxes etc. Through windows, I'd just use "server.domain.local" and it would act as through I was plugged directly into the network. However, this does not work on the mac.

Any ideas if what I'm after is possible? i.e mapping a drive to the fileserver, connecting to exchange etc?

Advice is welcome!

For basic file share connection, in the Finder...

Go -> Connect to Server
(or COMMAND-K)

smb://hostname.com/sharename

You should also take a look at MacWindows Report: Active Directory and Macs. But basically, if you are authenticating against a Windows 2000/2003 domain using Active Directory, what you want to do is open Directory Access in your /Applications/Utilities folder, authenticate the app, check Active Directory, click the configure button, and fill in your domain info. If you are only connecting to a Windows network, in the same Directory Access app, check the box next to SMB/CIFS, click the configure button, and enter your workgroup name and WINS server (if you have one). For connecting to Exchange, you can use either Mail or Entourage. Both of which will walk you through the process of connecting to an exchange server.
