hi y'all
i'm connected to the internet using DHCP, when i turn on the computer and plug the cable i automatically get an IP address, subnet mask and router numbers. the "DNS server" and "search domains" boxes are empty. network status says i'm connected and all's working. then suddenly the connection stops working. it's happened at random times with itunes when i'm listening to the radio or just surfing the net, or both at the same time, there seems to be no pattern. then i check network status and it still says i'm connected, IP address is there, etc but the connection won't work, i tried using other stuff that use internet connection such as MSN or software update and they won't connect either.
i tried using DHCP with manual address, wrote IP but then internet status says no IP's been assigned.
i dont want to have to restart everytime i get "disconnected"!
what the hell is going on?? this doesn't happen on my sister's ibook. i checked every item under built-in ethernet and everything is exactly the same as mine. the other 2 PCs work fine as well, so i'm guessing it's some setting on my ibook?
although this sounds a bit like the "iBook will not pick up IP from DHCP server" i don't think it's exactly the same thing so i made a new topic...
any help will be appreciated!

First of all, if the other computers that can successfully connect are using DHCP then stay away from trying to assign DNS and static numbers. The DHCP router is handling all that.
It sounds like you are getting random connections and disconnects? Is that right?
When it is not acting correctly, enter this IP address: 17.254.3.183 if there is a DNS problem this will bypass it.

How about some more info so we can nail this down with you? Like what kind of connection do you have-DSL or Cable? What kind of modem do you have, and what router? And quite importantly, what computer are you having this problem on-it sounds like it's a PC but I'm not sure.

hi,
thanks for helping guys...
it's an i book G4 running macOSX 10.3.9
i have a cable connection, the router is from D-link model DI524, the modem is a motorola SB5101. is that kind of info you were asking?
i'm able to automatically connect when i start the computer, then after a while (the time varies a lot) i'm not able to use the internet anymore. the weird thing is that when i go to network, it says i'm still connected to the internet (IP address is still there) but nothing will work, no radios on itunes, no firefox, no MSN...
i tried disconnecting the cable and putting it back, tried typing in all the info manually (IP, router, etc), but the only thing that works is restarting the computer. then i'm automatically connected again, until it fails again.
sorry if this sounds rather hazy but i'm still a complete dummy with computers...

I still want you to type 17.254.3.183 in a browser when your computer stops working on the net.

yes, i still have to try that. but, surprisingly, the internet has been working non-stop since saturday! i opened 1000 websites, listened to 10 different online radios and it wouldn't stop working! go figure... but as soon as it does (i'm assuming at some point it will) i'll try that.

ok so the internet is now working again. i tried to open my yahoo mail just for the sake of it and miraculously it worked. i have absolutely no idea what went on here but for the 1st time i was able to navigate again after getting disconnected. go figure.
maybe it had something to do with typing that IP you mentioned?

That IP address has always solved a lot of problems for me.
Are you sure your connection problem is fixed?

i'm not 100% sure, since this could be a one-time thing...
i'm waiting (again!) for the connection to fail and see if it comes back!
(who would've thought i'd want my connection to fail?!)
