Stumbled across a really good step by step configuration procedure to help
hopeless retards like myself to set up my router to ensure fast downloads
with Aquisitions new torrent option. Only problem is , there is one part of the
advice I dont understand and I am hoping someone will read the instructions
below and shed a light on what the first "start" and and "finish"
ports might be. I understand everything else.
Here it is, Hope others find this useful;
I have a Netgear DG834, which is the router a lot of people are having trouble with port forwarding so I thought I'd post a fairly definitive walkthrough for how to set your DG834 router up with port forwarding.
Please +link this article from your website so others can find the info.
I will explain both the basic theory behind the port forwarding, and then in the second section give you a walkthrough of how to set it up specifically for BitTorrent.
GENERIC PORT FORWARDING SETUP
*Other routers also use this form of port forwarding, it may be easily extended to other router setups*
The DG834 uses services as its way of defining rules for the built in firewall. To add port forwarding, you must just add services covering the appropriate ports and then add that service to the firewall rules as a trusted set of ports. This will become clearer.
1. Login to your router, open up a webbrowser and go to 192.169.0.1 (or the address you have assigned to your router, this is the default) and login. I believe the defaults are PASS : admin PASSWORD : password (check your manual)
2. Click on the Services link under Maintenance on the left.
3. Click the Add Custom Service button
4. Name : This does not matter, call it something you will remember though
Type : In most cases TCP/UDP is what you should have here, for some very specific port forwarding you will need to be specific. Just experiment if TCP/UDP does not work, you cant harm it.
Start port : The range of ports which ______HERE- WHAT NUMBERS ARE NEEDED?
Finish port : you would like to forward
Click Apply
5. Again under maintenance click Firewall Rules, then under the INBOUND SERVICES (important) click Add
6. Before entering these options you must run ipconfig from a command prompt, and note the IP Address shown. If you dont know how to do this...theres thousands of tutorials on the inet, google it.
Service : in this drop down list the service you added will be there, select it.
Action : ALLOW always (or whichever option you require)
Send to LAN server : type the IP address you found in ipconfig here
WAN users : Any
Log : Never
Click Apply
7. Thats it! Check back in firewall rules, there should be a new service added and the checkbox ticked for enable.
BITTORRENT SPECIFIC
Follow the above tutorial exactly but in step 4 use these options :
Name : Bit Torrent
Type : TCP/UDP
Start port : 6881
Finish port : 6999
A rather useful site for those setting port forwarding up for bittorrent.
