hey gang,
my wireless router (linksys) finally died on me tonight. i dunno what happened. just one minute it was working (although slowly) and then the next all the lights were off ... couldn't have been a power surge (i don't think) because everything else is still working (television, vcr, etc.) on that same circuit and surge connector.
it was an old linksys befw 1124s 2.4Ghz wireless 'b' access point router (that's a mouthful).
at any rate, i have temporarily relocated my desk and computer to be physically closer to the broadband modem so that i can connect directly (using cat5).
and my... the speed has increased. not just a little, but a LOT.
speed test revealed a network dl speed around 4mbps.
my old speed test was around 1MBps. thoughts?
was this a blessing in disguise...? :-)
oh yeah, i have a powerbook g4/1.33ghhz standard network capabilities (g?).

I think that the BEFW11S4 was the real block here. It's an old design, and one that Linksys dropped a long time ago-the last firmware update for it was quite a while ago.
I'd get a new wireless router (or a new wired router and a new wireless access point-the configuration I have) and I think you'll see much better speeds through it/them.
According to Apple, the 12" PB/1.33GHz has an AirPort Extreme card, so yes, it's the G standard. You want G equipment anyway, because not all B hardware supports WPA and you REALLY don't want to depend on WEP for wireless privacy-'cause it's poo.

well, unfortunately i do not have $50 - $60 for a new router, so i am gonna have to make do with (hard) wired connection for now.
as i mentioned, i am not complaining all that much because my speeds have basically been increased by 4.

It sounds like time to get the house brand sodas and the cheap mac-n-cheeze for a week or so to save up for a router. And keep your eye on the newspaper ads-I seem to recall that Fry's runs ads something like every other day or so in the Chronicle, with the big ones on Saturday and Sunday... And they often have some incredible deals (for a limited time only and while supplies last!) for networking stuff.

At my goddaughter's college graduation, the valedictorian said in her speech: "if you've ever price shopped for ramen noodles, you might be a college student." Truer words are seldom spoken.
