We recently converted to Verizon FIOS service. We have an iMac G4 and G5 that run through wired connections to the fiber service through a Linksys WRT54g wireless and wireline router which is set up to support either the B or G wireless standard and uses wep encryption.
Our son has a Windows XP HP notebook. It connects wirelessly with NO problem to the Linksys router.
Our daughter had an original iMac DV (Ruby). It's monitor is failing and we'd like to upgrade her to a PB G3 Wallstreet that we've had - which is working fine. We are trying to attach it over a Linksys WET11 wireless ethernet bridge to the WRT54g and we cannot connect.
The WRT54g is set up to distribute local net starting at 192.168.1.100 and checking the Network system preference indicates that is working fine for the other systems.
Like others here, I've googled, rebooted, and just can't seem to do the right things in the right order. The steps that come with the WET11 user guide don't work as advertised.
Some how I am missing the point about how an ethernet bridge actually works. For example, when the local Mac is talking to the bridge, what ip address scheme does it use? Most recommend using DHCP, but the bridge doesn't hand out addresses. What makes the bridge pass the G3 request for an ip address to the router?
When we set up the G3 to DHCP through the bridge, it ends up with a "self-assigned" ip address starting with 169.254....
And what about address cloning? Nobody has said whether that matters or not?
Thanks for any advice for another frustrated user trying to make this old horse work.
