I have an iMacDV running OS 9 and just purchased a C2D Macbook. I'd like some advice on how best to transfer my files (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, mp3s, etc.) to the Macbook, without using an external drive or burning CDs of files.

Can I mount the iMac on the Macbook as a networked drive, with a direct cable or over my home network that has a router with DHCP-assigned IP addresses?

What is the best way to connect the two computers running two different OSs?

If they're already both networked you're almost all the way there. Simply enable file sharing on both, and you can then push or pull the files you're interested in (as long as they're in shared folders).

If the iMac is not yet networked, go for it! This is the quickest way to get the two machines talking to each other.

You could also boot the iMac in Firewire target disk mode (hold down T while booting) and connect it to your MacBook with a Firewire cable. This will give you the fastest transfer speeds, without having to network the two Macs.

I will try the Firewire method first, but I'm glad to know I can easily network the machines running different Mac OS versions. Thanks.
