Just got a new MacBook Pro and was able to use iTunes and Airport Express with Airtunes to play music in another room. Today I hooked up my cable modem to the express and am surfing via airport but lost the ability to play music. I was hoping to be able to do both... Can anyone tell me if it can be done and what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

I'm doing both things right now. I don't know what your problem might be...

That in itself is helpful as I now at least know it's possible!

I will dig deeper and hopefully here back some more advice from the forum members as well.

Thanks!

Oh man... i am really going crazy now.
If anyone could please help I would really appreciate it.

I have a MacBook Pro, Airport Express and Comcast cable.

My Comcast modem is attached to the Airport Express in the living room and so is my stereo.

I have been successful at sending music OR surfing but never both. I have gone nuts with the hundreds of configurations. Please help with the set-up process.

Restarted EVERYTHING yet? Not just sleep on the computer, but OFF. The same for the Express. It's probably just a "confused" device, and restarting will fix that.

Thanks ghporter. By the time I read this I had already worked through some set up advice given to me by a member on the Apple Support forums with success.

Here (in case anyone needs it in the future) is the set up that was given:

Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the Cable modem & AX. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.

Setup the AX
With the network components powered down, set up the AX, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:

AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Create a closed network (unchecked)
- Wireless Security: Not enabled
- Channel: Automatic
- Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible

Internet tab
- Connect Using: Ethernet
- Configure: Using DHCP
- WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic

Network tab
- Distribute IP addresses (checked)
- Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

Music tab
- Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)

In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
- Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

At least some of those (the modem/router and AX especially) require a restart. I'll give you 50¢ if the restart alone didn't do a lot to correct the problem.

Whenever ANYTHING gets goofy, restart everything in order from the wall (where your broadband signal comes in) through each device to your computer. That fixes (an estimated) 90% of problems all by itself. Really. If a restart doesn't fix the problem THEN start troubleshooting.

tagaturo, I'm glad you got it all working, but that was a whole lot of work-I hope you didn't go through all of it for just the value the restart would have given you.

Well, truth be told, I am not sure how i got it going but I did do a restart along the way as it was required when I installed a wireless (bluetooth) mouse... so that may have been the very thing that did it. Thanks again!!!

I had Verizon Fios installed with their wireless modem. Now I have my AirPort Express that I'd like to use to connect to my stereo. For the life of me I can not configure it so that I can stay connected with the Verizon wireless modem AND listen to AirTunes.

Is there a way to do it?

I've searched for a week on other Mac user sites and was told that THIS is the forum for answers!!

Thanks in advance.

Confidently,

5X
