Hello, relatively newbie question here I'm sure.

I have just joined the Mac family, having been a curious admirer for some time. I ise a wireless modem router, that I talk to via the browser on 192.168.1.1

The Mac has been up and running online with ease, but it occasionally drops the service completely, and I cannot get anywhere by typing in the IP address.

Is there a Mac equivalent of a 'ping' that I can do? Any other suggestions?

You can ping from the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/) if you like command line, or Network Utility (also under /Applications/Utilities/) if you like a GUI.

Turn off the modem/router for two minutes (time it) and then try renewing your DHCP address through Network Preferences (under the Apple () menu, select System Preferences and then double-click on Network). Choose "Show: AirPort" and then click on the TCP/IP button, then click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button.

This may not fix the problem, but it's awful easy to do and only slows you down a trifle. And it MAY fix your problem; sometimes routers get stupid and forget their jobs, but restarting them makes them "smart" again.

Sorry, I should build some more on my question. If the internet connection goes, so does my access to the control panel (which is accessed through an IP address in a browser). I'm wondering how to correct that.

This means that your computer is losing a valid IP address on your local network. And my above advice holds-turn the router off for two minutes then turn it back on. Let us know how that works for you.
