is there a way to hook up a hard drive directly to an airport extreme, or do you have to connect it to a mac and then to the extreme?
I have an extreme as the base station and several airport expresses each connnected to a stereo in different rooms around the house. I want to be able to play music off the big hard drive, controlling it from various laptops carried around the house, and send the tunes to whichever room in the house I want to. Is there any way to do this without having to hook up a mac directly to the extreme/hard drive full of music, acting as a server?
thanks!

this is all pretty convoluted. Maybe the issue is just this:
Can a hard disk be connected directly to an airport extreme and show up on the network? Or does it have to be connected to a mac, and THEN to the airport?

No, and NO. An AirPort Extreme is not built to host a drive; its USB port is specific for a printer and in the field it seems that it won't even try to do anything else with it. I got a Network Attached Storage box for about $75 (Coolmax CN-550) that also has a USB 2.0 port; I like this setup because I have network access to the drive in the box, but if I need to back up a LOT of data, I can pull the ethernet cable, pop in a USB cable, and the data FLIES. Would this be something that would suit your needs?

Yeah, that could be just what I'm looking for. (He said hopefully). Some way to connect an external hard drive directly to an airport network. Would it work if I connected the 500 gig hard drive by usb to the coolmax, and then the coolmax to the airport via ethernet?
Do you think it would work for my application?

You might get the network drive-to-AirPort via ethernet thing to work. I have no experience with that, as mine is wired to a switch. But I connect to it via wireless all the time without any problem. I guess that, if it's on the network, it really doesn't matter how it's connected to the network...

Do I have to buy a drive to put in the coolmax, or could I just hook up my lacie to it's usb connection? And what kind of switch do you use to connect the coolmax to the airport?
