I have a Netgear DG834 router/modem that normally works perfectly well at home.

I have bought the router to my parent's for Christmas and assumed I could just plug it in to the phone and pick up the WIFI signal on my Apple Powerbook via Airport.

However, Airport is not listing the router, so presumably it is not broadcasting a signal, and I cannot connect to it manually via the 'Other' manual set-up option in Internet Connect utility. The 'i' symbol on the router is lit up so I know it is connected to the Internet OK.

I haven't bought a network cable with me so can't hard-wire into it.

Any ideas? Am I being stupid?

Many thanks in advance for any help. I am currently trying to troubleshoot/surf via a GPRS phone and it ****s!

"Plug it into the phone"? How do you mean? And if the wireless router is indeed providing any signal, you should see it with your PowerBook. Is the PowerBook listing something like "Netgear" nearby? It could be that the router has reverted to its default, factory settings, and is no longer using the network name (SSID) you gave it.

Your parents probably don't have DSL, do they? If they did, they would have their own router.
