I set up a network between my Win XP computer and our imac OS X ver. 10.2.8.
It seems to be working fine. I can view files from my XP, open them etc. but in trying to copy the Pictures folder to my XP machine I get a error message:
"Cannot read from the source file or disk".
Any help would be appreciated - i'm trying to back up the pictures so I can reinstall OS X.
Thanks!
(Merry Christmas)

What kind of networking is enabled on the XP machine? If you go to an Explorer window and click on "Tools," then "Folder Options", then click on the "View" tab, and THEN scroll to the bottom, you'll find "the preventer of Windows file sharing," otherwise known as "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)." UNCHECK this monstrosity.
And how are you connecting to the XP machine? Samba? "Use Windows file sharing"? Other? It makes a difference sometimes.

Thanks! I tried that but it was already un-checked.
I also thought my Zonealarm firewall was blocking it so have been tinkering with that but no luck.
I guess I'm networking through windows file sharing - I set it up using the "Add Network Place wizard". I have a network set up using a netgear router (wired).
Thanks,
K

On the Mac end, you need to go into System Preferences and under Sharing turn on Windows File Sharing and Personal File Sharing (if you haven't already done that). The issue here is that (I believe) OS X can't read the files unless you tell it you might be connecting to a Windows machine.
I can't find anything definitive about this particular issue, but it does come down to the two OSs not properly talking to each other. If the Windows machine is able to see the files, then something is working, maybe just not everything you need-yet.

That seems to have done it. Thought I had checked that but apparently not.
Another note for others that may be having this problem - I have to copy individual folders from i photo - at first I tried to copy the main folder but that fails. Copying each sub-folder is working fine.
Thanks for the help!
