If I try to go to a site by just entering the domain name without the www or com, it takes an extra 5 seconds or so before the site starts to load than if I had used the full www.sitename.com format.

This happens in both Safari 2.0.4 and Firefox 2.0.0.1 on 10.4.8 PPC

My connection is a wired connection to a WRT54G to a Motorola 4101 cable modem via Comcast.

Any thoughts?

Correct. If you don't include the .com part, Firefox will go to google, search for whatever you typed in, and take you to the first hit.

If you want Firefox to automatically add the .com with no delay, hit Cmd+Enter.
