Recently set this up as our office networked file server.
All worked OK at first (a bit slow but I see in other posts that this is a common fault). However first one mac and then the others started to show the same problem. While any created directories and folders show up fin over the network, files saved to this disc are simply not there or invisible.
As I say, first is was one mac but over the last few days this error has spread to all the macs on the network.
Any ideas?

What format are you using? I've seen similar problems with FAT and ext3 formats (in fact, anything except HFS+).

hmm. Whatever came out of the box. I guess that might be FAT 32? Is there a way to check?

I have exactly the same problem with my LaCie netwrok drive. I also find that
a) if I try and drag a file with the same name as an invisible file from my desktop to the drive, I get an error message telling me the file couldn't be overwritten as it was invisible!
b) I can open these files from within their host application as the invisible files appear in the 'open' dialogue box. Weird!
I am using a MacBook, OS X 10.4

I did find that the disc would also save files called (for example) window.jpg and Window.jpg This casused huge problems copying files off the disc as the Mac OS would think they were duplicate files and stop copying.
Moot point now as the drive also failed!! sheesh!!

Andrew, were LaCie's tech support people as useless for you as they were for me?

Hi Andrew,
We also had the same problem on our new LaCie Ethernet Mini (500GB): any file saved to the drive from TextEdit, Preview or Cheetah3D ( www.cheetah3d.de) has its invisibility flag set.
The same files saved locally and then dragged to the LaCie in the finder are fine, so it must be something to do with saving, rather than the filetype.
The LaCie technical support has been total rubbish so far. As soon as I can find a reliable way of getting our data off the drive safely (without leaving behind any files I cant see) I'll be asking for my money back.
I can recommend PathFinder ( Welcome to Cocoatech) for seeing the invisible files.

Hi,
I posted the same problem at a Dutch macOSx forum ( www.maxosx.nl) and the only solution that came out of there was using the help of some additional software that makes invisble files visible. Like the one suggested here. So no help from Holland.
I actually did this on my table, because it is one of those problems you cannot control and especially not use when you are in a hurry.
So far it has happpened to files from simple text for my website (.html files) and some .jpg files. But luckily not to any word (or apple works) files.
Any news here? I am also strongly considering sending the thing back allthough I do love the elegant solution it is as the small business server.
sincerely
Michiel

of course they were. I would have to think very hard before buying any other LaCie product, which is sad because they make some good looking stuff.
We've gone back to using an old G4 powermac as the server, basically using an old machine as a big network disc.
