Hello all,

I have a brand new intel macbook. When I connect my ethernet cable at home, it hooks right up and I'm online.

When I take it to work and plug in the ethernet, nothing at all happens. Nothing even shows up in my Network window.

At my job, it looks like DSL with a router to about 4 other computers currently. No login/pass required.

Any tips? Thanks!

Ask your IT people. IT is the company's network, and the IT guys are the ones that handle it, so they're who you ask.

Personally, I think their wireless is running with the SSID broadcast turned off. While this isn't great as a security tactic, it obviously does keep people from just plopping their laptops down and connecting. I think there's an even chance that they'll hook you up without any problems, just as long as they know you need to connect.

Unfortunately, this is a small family owned business and not the traditional work place you might imagine. Sorry, I should of specified that. Thanks for the tip though!

maybe what you're trying to use is a small switch or hub, which is also connected to the dsl modem. On some switches with only 5 ports plus the uplink, the uplink will disable port 5 when the uplink is being used.

if the uplink is being used, you can't enable it, if that's the standard for your model.

you could check the model, find its manual online, and that way find out if the model disables its 5th port when the uplink port is used.
