If I'm on cable with my iMac and someone else is on the same cable connection with a PC and doing peer-to-peer ...can someone from the outside tap into my iMac? (as I gather they can the PC...)

I don't care about the PC becoming a garbage can but I'd rather not my precious Mac. Thanks.

It depends on the cable system. On your LAN, the answer is yes.

On the local leg of the cable system, it depends. Your cable system SHOULD be configured so that you cannot "see" any of your neighbors' computers (try looking with your PC-there's a "find computers" option in My Network Places or thereabouts). If you can't see them, they can't see you and thus can't connect to you.

Did that answer your question, or did I not completely understand it?

Glenn: Thanks - that catches it. I was worried that the peers ...peering into the PC thru the cable and plucking packets were perhaps able to sneak over to my iMac where there's good stuff I don't want an outsider having access to. Thanks again.

In general, properly configured cable systems TODAY are not susceptible to that sort of thing. When cable Internet first showed up though, it was very common to be able to say "Hey, Gladys! The Nelsons got a new computer-and Junior's been surfing porn!" This was what we call "bad" and the cable companies (slowly) fixed it through hardware upgrades in their distribution system. Today, if you can see a neighbor's computer, there's a hardware problem in the cable system (at least in 99% or more of cable systems).

If you don't need to share files etc, make use of OS X's security features: in System preferences > Sharing be sure the sharing services are NOT checked and that the firewall is turned ON. Keeping your computers behind a router with NAT will also help protect them from the outside world (but you would need to set up port forwarding--also called port mapping--to forward the relevant P2P ports to the PC) .
