Today, I just bought a USB720 wireless broadband modem from Verizon. The installation manual says that I don't need to install the included software "VZAccess Manager", but that I do need to activate my modem before setup. Unfortunately, I didn't configure my Macbook with a modem. Is there a way around this or do I need to go back to the Apple store to have a modem installed?

Uhm. You just bought a USB720 wireless broadband modem from Verizon. I'm thinking that is the modem they may be referring to.

I'm just guessing, I've not used one of these...

I have this modem also, and used the Verizon software to activate. It's simple and painless. However, my manual (I presume you got one too) says you can activate it without the Verizon software, but you need to have downloaded and installed the Apple WWAN Support Update 1.0, released yesterday.

My limited experience so far is that the Apple support with this modem is a little different than the Verizon software. For example, I can make a VPN connection (Cisco client) when connected via Verizon drivers, but not using the Apple WWAN drivers.

My advice is to go ahead and install the Verizon software.

Depending on what model phone you have, you may be able to connect to Verizon's EV DO network through your cellphone using bluetooth, and skip the card altogether. I use a Motorola E815, and found the instructions at Jason Gilstrap | Motorola E815 as a Mac OS X modem

I just bought one of these yesterday. I activated it w/o installing the VZW software. So far I'm LOVING it.
