Hi! Am having some problems with SSH and was wondering if anybody could help. I was looking on the web but did not find any solution. So... let me try to explain the situation: I am in a studio in Groningen (here for two weeks for work). This is a "city apartments" studio (if anybody knows). I think the connection they provide is one of those that should open a login screen in the browser so that you can type a login and a password. This did not work yesterday (safari was saying "can't connect to the server") I complained a bit today then the lady asked me the IP address, I gave it to her and after that I can magically browse (I did not have to type any login or password!).

But now I can't ssh... The error message I get is:

ssh: connect to host slogin.mpa-garching.mpg.de port 22: Operation timed out

I asked my system manager and he says that the IP address I get assigned is "not routed" ehm.... i have to admit I have no idea what this means. But so... is there a solution to this problem????? I would really need to connect ....

Sorry for the long post but thought to explain the situation...

Thanks a lot in advance, petuzza

Sounds like requests to TCP port 22 are being blocked. Is your host behind a router/NAT? If so, incoming connections to the IP/DNS name your network presents itself to the world as need to forward connections to port 22 to your specific machine within the network. This maybe what your system manager meant.

Another possibility is that outgoing TCP requests on port 22 on the network you are on are being blocked. You could test this if you had another SSH server to try to connect to that you know works from outside its LAN.
