Hi,
I'm a MacBook newbie, I've recently swirched from PC to a MacBook and I'm loving it! Unfortunatley, I'm unable to connect to the 'net with my MacBook.

My old Sagem 800 modem (with usb) wasn't recognised by the MacBook. I purchased a wireless D-Link DSL-G624T ADSL2/2+Router. Airport seems to recognise the signal, but when I open Safari or Firefox it doesn't connect . The same problem happens when I connect the MacBook to the router via ethernet.
It works when I connect it to my old PC!

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,
Steve

I went to D-Link's website, closest model to yours was the DI-624 -- is that your model?

Irregardless, if your MacBook sees the wireless network and "connects" to it, you'll need to make sure it is receiving an IP from your router.

To check and make sure:

1. Open System Preferences >> Network >> Airport >> TCP/IP
Does it show you an IP? If its a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is a dummy IP.

If that doesn't work, create a new network location -- i.e. Home

Drag AirPort to the top of the list, this will give AirPort the highest priority.
Then enter your Network Name and password into the Preferred Networks list. Then apply your changes.

After they have applied, check to see if you're now pulling an IP sucessfully from your D-Link wireless router.

The key thing is --for your MacBook to surf the net, you've gotta have an IP assigned from your router.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply - much appreciated.

The DSL is here:
D-Link United Kingdom

It claims to be Mac compatible - but the CD it comes with is only for Windows.

When I click on the TCP/IP tab on 'Network' as you kindly suggested it displays a 192.XXX.X.X IP address and a 25.XXX.XXX.X subnet mask and a router 192.XXX.X.X

The DNS Server space is blank as is the search domain.

The IPv6 Address has a nos and letters in. I'm not sure what to do next!

Thanks again,

Steve

The connection hasn't been established. Have you configured the WAN settings of the router? (You may need to establish a direct connection from the modem to the computer before connecting the modem to the router.)

Hi - no I haven't. How do I do that? Sorry to be so thick - there are no instructions for the Mac with the router.
Cheers,
Steve

All you have to do is type 192.168.1.1 in your safari address bar and hit return. This will bring up the router settings. Default user name is admin; default password is also admin. Go to WAN settings and enter your ISP connection user name and password in the fields provided. Leave all other settings as they are, as default settings work in the UK out of the box. Click "Apply" and you will get a message asking you if you want to save and reboot. Click yes and then wait 2 minutes while router resets. Once everything comes back up, click status and you will see immediately whether or not you have a WAN connection, as there will be a green radio button and an ISP-assigned external IP address. You will now be able to browse the internet using either ethernet cable or Airport. Don't forget to apply security (I recommend WPA) and to change your admin password also. It's not a bad idea to apply MAC filters for even greater protection.
