I will like to connect two macs with airport cards without using a router. This is akin to connecting two macs with ethernet cable.

then make the other one join it via the airport menu.

Yes. It's simply an "ad hoc" wireless network.

Note that ad hoc networks are by design TEMPORARY, and you will have to establish them EVERY TIME you want to use them. If you're going to be doing a lot of wireless connecting between computers, or going to do it for a long time, it's better to buy a wireless router and save the cumulative time you'll spend setting up the ad hoc network.
