Hi

I gave my old basestation to my dad who is conected to the internet via another provider than me. According to his instructions it's possible to go online without a router, just by plugging the computer to to wall with an ethernet cable. And he claims to have done that with his PC.

So I plugged my old basestation straight into the wall - no luck. I could reach the basestation with my powerbook, but I could not get online. Then I tried my Powerbook conected straight into the wall, and still no internet. As soon as I plug my dads old router in and connect my Mac or the basestation to the router everything worked fine. Is it only PC's that can connect directly??

The thing is my dad is thinking about getting an Airport Extreme station, but if he cannot plug it in without the router he doesn't wanna buy it and I don't like to promise it will work Why is it not working?? Is it because it's been online in my house and has IP-adresses and things stored from there? I tried installing the software on the basestaion again and that didn't help either. I just don't understand why I can't do it on the powerbook either. Any ideas??

There's probably some kind of software running on the PC that's handling authentication and/or a particular data protocol (PPPoA probably). It may be a good idea to check out the PC and see how it's doing the connecting. That would be some good background information from which to start working on this problem.

The thing is it says specifically in the instructions from the internetprovider to turn PPPoE off. And getting online on the PC is very straight forward with TCP/IP, automatic IP-adress and DNS adresses. I don't understand why I can't do it on the Mac or with the basestation!?

Could it be that the basestation needs to be connected for a while before it will get the IP adress?? It was plugged in a good 30 minutes yesterday with no result. Right now I am online on the basestation but it's plugged into my dad's old router.

It's very frustrating and I hate my dad's comments about Mac being crap
