Greetings - I just bought an iMac after years of using Windows and it's hopefully supposed to arrive today. I'm familiar with Windows, but don't know much about the Mac OS.

One thing that I'm concerned about is connecting to our existing wireless home network (Linksys wireless router, with WEP security and cable modem). We have two other Windows XP computers, one of which is connected by ethernet to one of the ports on the router, and the other one connects via a wireless adapter. I want to leave the XP computer as the "admin" which controls the router and just want to have the iMac connect wirelessly.

When I bring my work laptop home (also XP) home, it "views" the available networks and I can just type my password or encryption key - is there something similar for the iMac where I would just be able to connect by typing in the network encryption key (I recall seeing somewhere that you have to type in a "$" first on a mac)? I went to one of the one hour introduction course at a local apple store, and the person running the class sounded like this would not be a problem.

I'm hoping the setup will go smoothly, but just wanted to get as much information as possible first.

Thanks.

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!

At the top right corner of your iMac's screen, you should see the AirPort icon (it looks like this: only black on white). That says that the AirPort card in your iMac has detected your network. Click on it to get your options-one of the options will be to join your existing network. Enter the WEP password (if it's a hex key, enter a '$' first) and you should be good to go.

Except that you need to dump WEP and move up to WPA. WEP is NOT secure at all-it's almost trivial to break it-while WPA is superbly secure.

But connect with what you've got first and then mess with making it really secure.
