Well, I am very impressed with the USB connectivity of the new AEBS. Here's the deal - I have a 60 GB LaCie hooked up and a 512 MB old iPod Shuffle (I'll explain later). I have one Mac Pro, and the rest are Windows clients. They can all see and transfer files to this wonderful LaCie. But one of my Windows clients wants a folder for herself - which is fine, except she wants it passworded. How can this be accomplished? I thought perhaps if I hooked up my old shuffle (enable disk mode on iTunes first) that I could make the LaCie public and have only my person who wants private backup access the shuffle. No luck there - any password you set applies to both drives. So, I'm stuck. Are there ways around this?

Thanks,
Harrison (htdefiant)

Create an encrypted disc image for the user on the regular shared drive. They get their privacy via that disk. I'm not sure why someone needs to password protect their files unless they are in HR or some sensitive info. Depending on the specific situation perhaps there's a good reason other than my guess.

A absolutely *love* the new Airport stations with shared printer and ethernet and drive sharing. I hooked up a drive with a USB hub built-in (one for under a mini) and it fits perfectly and allows me to daisy in another external USB drive. You can share multiple drives and a printer from this thing. I wasn't sure it was going to allow for more than one device, but it handles the second drive like a charm! Way to go Apple, this makes the cost worth everything over simply wireless routers (and maybe printer sharing)!

Oh, I guess I didn't catch that. There are some windows-based applications for creating protected files. It might be easiest to search for one. Try searching at:

On second thought, if the data is important enough I wouldn't go this route. Putting your files into an image could make the files more susceptible to corruption if there were a problem with the disc or archive. And with a PC image or protected archive you maybe should have need for greater worry.

Depending on a person's need though, the suggestion may work.
