Hello everyone,

I have been researching a Gigabit Ethernet NAS drive to attach to the 2nd port of the Mac Pro but I have a question.

If this drive is connected and the Mac is asleep, is the NAS drive still accessible on the network or not, in other words will the ethernet ports still be awake or also asleep?

Thanks for any info on this.

regards

No, it won't work when the Mac Pro is sleeping.

But why would you plug it into the ethernet port on your Mac Pro?

Plug the NAS into your switch/router and it will be available to everyone all the time.

Thanks for the answer Mduell,

The reason I would plug it into the Mac is that my linksys only has 10/100 ports compared to the mac having the gigabit port.

No sense in buying a gigabit NAS drive if it's only going to go slower than Firewire.

I could buy a gigabit switch but I have a limited budget... and I have to save for the next gen iPod

Here is a fairly cheap 5 port 10/100/1000 switch from netgear:
Newegg.com - NETGEAR GS605 10/100/1000Mbps Desktop Switch 5 x RJ45 4000 MAC Address Table 128KB Buffer Memory - Retail

Here are a bunch of gigabit switches under $50: Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
I'd recommend any of them except for the unrated Rosewill.
