Hi. We have a mac network which connects to a PC server with internal hard drives. We use this to store files and run our database. I can connect to it seemingly fine and can even copy files to and fro but occasionally (especially with larger folders) the copying will stop, give me an Error -50 message and then disconnect me. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can get this sorted?

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!

Can you provide a bit more information? What kind of size are you connecting with the label "larger folders"? It sounds like your connection is timing out or dropping because the server is not finding the requested file(s) in a timely fashion, but because that particular resource is in use, it's not automatically allowing reconnects.

There's a lot of "can't connect" error 50 information around the 'net, so I'm assuming you're running into that as a consequence of the connection you're using stalling or being dropped for some other reason. Are the server's drives relatively well defragmented? Finding and saving stuff on highly fragmented drives can really mess up a networked save or copy.

The larger folders I'm talking about are about 1.4gig. It freezes about half of the way through. So you would recommend we defragment the drive and optimise it as much as we can? Any other ideas?

Not right off-1.4GB isn't that big.. Someone with more ideas is bound to chime in on this though.
