Go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Services and click on Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing. I think that this should do it

Hmmm..... I don't think that is quite right. Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing turn on services on your local Mac only. I think you need to check your System Prefences --> Network --> TCP/IP settings. Tell us what you have there...

Uhhh.... No, those options won't help. All they do is turn your Mac into a file and web server.

Actually it does influence. If you turn on Internet Sharing and those two services are not enabled, the dialog box will tell you that some settings under the Services tab may conflict. "Other settings may conflict with Internet Sharing." And there's a "More Info.." button that when pressed, it takes you to the Services tab.

liquidsilver,
Personal File Sharing allows a user to share files that are on that Mac.
Personal Web Sharing allows a user to share a web site on that Mac.
Internet Sharing allows a user to share an internet connection with other machines.
Unfortunately it doesn't address the original poster's problem of not getting connected to the net.
He is getting a good strong signal from his wireless, we still need to know if he is getting a self-assigned address, if the router is actually connecting or if his DNS isn't working...

You can connect to your iMac wirelessly and then share it's Internet connection with your Macbook, but not through the Personal Web Sharing setting. Instead, go to System Preferences > Sharing > and then click the "Internet" tab. Using the "Internet Sharing" settings, you can turn on the ability to share your connection.

However, your iMac must be connected to the Internet using the wired Ethernet connection in order to connect your Macbook wirelessly to it. Internet Sharing requires 2 different network connections. It will then bridge the Internet connection between the two.

If you have broadband, it's easier to just buy a WiFi router. That way, both computers can connect wirelessly (or wired) and not have to leave the iMac on all the time.

Look:

As the image says, you need to turn on Personal Web Sharing. This happened to me once. I wanted to share my ethernet connection with another laptop and the other laptop had signal but could not connect to the internet. I had to turn on PWS for the other laptop to access the internet.

you may try to check the wireless settings if you do have your own wireless router.

Liquidsilver is correct but not clear: the sharING Mac's firewall settings can influence how the sharED Mac's connection through it works. But this doesn't really sound like it's exactly the problem.

For what it's worth, this is why I recommend an inexpensive router for ANY sharing situation. You don't need one Mac on to be able to surf on the other, and all the settings are in one convenient place.

The big question is "What is your Internet connection like (cable? DSL?) and what kind of equipment is between the iMac and the outside world? The type of connection and the hardware between that and the iMac could be the actual cause of the situation, but there's no way to be able to say for certain without knowing more.

Oh, and WELCOME TO THE MACNN FORUMS!

I just bought a macbook white. and the first day i bought it, i just connected to lan cable that has a internet connection , and it was working fine. but few days later when i was sendin a file thru skype the internet suddenly disconnected , and since that , the internet is not workin. then i thought maybe it has something to do with my connection and checked in my old laptop which has windows xp, but everything works fine. then i tried to connect mac using the same cable, it gives signal, that says built i ethernet connected but , i cant browse web or connect thru the itunes. i re-installed mac os x , but still the same.

in the tcp ip settings , it gets automatic Ip address, router address and everything, but still not connected.

by the way , i live in a dorm. if it doesnt connect am goin to contact the mac store...

OK. Have you tried resetting the router and the modem?
Is there a password on the router - are you sure your encryption settings are correct? Am I right that you cannot connect even with the cable?

I really think there probably is a modem, if there isn't, then that is most likely your issue.
