I often work between two computers (MacBook Pro and Tower ... both Intel and both on 10.4.9).

I have put files in a public drop box on one and tried to connect to and copy over to the other the files in that directory.

I can connect to the drop box just fine, but when I try to copy or drag over the files from the drop box, the network speed is SLOW< SLOW>SLOW ... I am using the ethernet connections on both and NOT the wireless card on the MacBook.

Any thoughts on why the speed would be so slow?

Try setting a manual duplex speed for both NICs instead of auto-negotiate.

Also, make sure you're using a Cat-5 and not Cat-3 cable.

The cable or one of the network jacks could be broken/in the process of breaking. I would try different cables.

Also, I would open Network Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities) and check the connection speed. What does it say?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

i agree with olePigeon to manually set the speed of NICS. in addition to that, try to use 10half Duplex mode. are your computers networked using a router or switch? distance factor is a must and of course try to change the cables. hope this may help
