how can i add my macbook as an authorized computer on a windows 2003 server domain at work so i can connect/access/share etcetera?

if i type in the smb://ip.address of the server & try to connect i get error code -36 can't read/write drive or something of that nature.

any help is much appreciated!

There are basically two things that have to happen:

Your server administrator has to turn off the packet/connection signing requirement on the server. (this will not be necessary with 10.5) This might just solve the problem right there.

But you can get even more with the second thing: someone with the authorization to do so on the server must use Directory Access (in Utilites) to bind your computer to the domain. This will allow you to then log in with your Domain Credentials (what you would use to log in to Windows) and automatically get your netowork home, and use "single sign on".

Note: this will not get you access to the print server. That is possible, but a bit outside the scope of this hint.

does that make the network any less secure by turning off the packet signing requirement on the server? pretty sure we wouldn't want that... if necessary, i'll upgrade to the latest release of osx that just came out in march i believe.

10.5 won't come out until late Summer or early Fall this year. You may be stuck with this until then.

As a general tip, make sure you have automatic updating turned on in your System Preferences. It helps your system stay immune to any security or compatibility problems that crop up. 10.4.9 is the latest release.
