Right now I'm using Airport and on someone else's network...I don't like being on someone else's network.

I don't have a wireless setup yet, just a router in my living room and then a very long rj45 cable running to my room...guess I need to buy a new cable eh? it's weird, because it hooks fine on my older laptop NIC

Are you 100% sure you're not trying to plug into your modem port? They're similar, but the modem port is RJ-11 and thus narrower, while the network RJ-45 port is wider. And you do have it right-side up, don't you? (That's my typical goof, by the way.)

If you sure you have the right one, can you post a picture of THE PORT AND THE CABLE PLUG? We might be able to help you out if we can see what's happening.

There's no built-in modem on the MacBooks...

By any chance is it a belkin ethernet cable? they seem to use their own weird-ass connectors, but it will work, just make sure you've got it lined up right, etc and force it in...

There's a little diagram to make sure you're aiming at the right port.

Oops-I forgot the Intel laptops didn't have a modem port...But that was the only thing I could think of that would be a problem. I was not aware that Belkin cables were odd; that's something to keep in mind.

For what it's worth, it's very difficult to hurt an RJ-45 port if your RJ-45 plug is aligned with it. Push hard, it's ok.
